We see the cause of the world's suffering as the individual's attachment to the chains of individual possessions. This leads to a sense of separateness. But through the process of meditation the Buddhist tradition calls mindfulness, we come to a new understanding of ourselves. We understand that we are not separate from each other. Instead, we see ourselves and others as one. This understanding is the basis of all our human relationships. In some sense we come to understand that we are all trees. The Buddha described the world of Suffering as being one of craving and attachment, filled with . The Buddha used the metaphor of the mind to explain the cycle of birth and death and the path to achieve the . Birth and death are two of the most fundamental and troubling experiences of human life. The origin of suffering has its roots in attachment to personal property and the suffering of separation that arises when we fall prey to the illusion of a self. But the illusion of a separate self is also the root of our attachment to things. In the Four Noble Truths, the Buddha described the suffering of birth and as "no different from the continuous change of weather and seasons. No matter where you go, you will find that these changes are constantly taking place." This is another of the Buddha's teachings. Although we see people born and die, we know it is all changing. The Buddha taught that our attachment to things—including the attachment to self—is the cause of our suffering and the source of our suffering is also our attachment to things. The Buddha taught that the way to overcome our attachment to things and become free from suffering is mindfulness. The Buddha taught that mindfulness is a skill that we can train to control our emotions. As with the Buddha's Four Noble Truths, we can use the teachings of the Bodhisattva in our attempt to overcome our attachment to our possessions. We can try to bring an end to suffering in the world by turning toward the world of suffering, and bringing our attention to the suffering of our fellow human beings.   Inspired by the Bodhisattva's teachings about the cycle of birth and death, the Buddhist tradition developed the idea of the , which can be translated as "Bodhisattva's mind," "Bodhisattva's consciousness," or simply "Bodhisattva awareness."
